Punjab Closed Metro, Electric and Speedo Bus Services for Muharram 9 and 10

LAHORE โ€“ The Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMTA) has announced the temporary suspension of several public transport services during the observance of Ashura. The decision has been taken as part of security arrangements for Muharram processions and religious gatherings.

According to a spokesperson for the authority, Metro Bus Service, Electric Bus Service, and Speedo Bus Service will remain closed on the 9th and 10th of Muharram. The suspension will affect commuters in multiple cities across Punjab.

Officials said the temporary closure will apply in Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi. These cities are expected to host large mourning processions and majalis during the religious observance. Authorities believe the suspension will help facilitate security operations and traffic management.

The PMTA stated that extensive security measures are being implemented across Punjab due to the large number of participants expected to attend Muharram events. Law enforcement agencies and local administrations are working together to maintain public safety and ensure peaceful observances.

According to officials, the decision was made after reviewing security requirements for the two days. The closure of transport services is intended to reduce congestion along procession routes and assist security personnel in carrying out their duties effectively.

In Lahore, a major mourning procession is scheduled to begin from Mori Gate. Authorities expect heavy crowds in and around the area. Additional security and traffic arrangements have therefore been put in place to manage movement and prevent disruptions.

Officials noted that public transport routes often intersect with procession paths during Muharram. Suspending services for a limited period allows authorities to better control traffic flow and respond quickly to any security concerns.

The temporary suspension is part of a broader security strategy being implemented throughout the province. Surveillance, traffic diversions, and deployment of additional personnel are among the measures being adopted to ensure public safety.

Residents have been advised to plan their travel in advance and use alternative transportation options during the suspension period. Authorities have also urged citizens to cooperate with security personnel and follow traffic advisories issued during Muharram.
