Maryam Nawaz Calls For Swift Reforms in Punjab Police, Sets Deadline

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has set a three-month deadline for reforms in the Police Department, aiming to improve law enforcement and public trust.

Chairing a meeting in Lahore, she requested a comprehensive plan for police reforms. The meeting also marked the launch of the Traffic Police One App and the Safe City Monitoring App, designed to help citizens report incidents quickly and efficiently.

Key Decisions on Police Reforms

Officials announced the installation of a Panic Button outside police stations for immediate complaint redressal. In principle, the government approved video and audio recording of the investigation process to ensure transparency.

An Online FIR Tracking System will also be introduced across the province. These initiatives are part of the deadline for reforms to make the police more accountable and responsive to public needs.

Traffic Reforms Continue

The meeting highlighted earlier traffic reforms introduced by Punjab for the first time in 60 years. Twenty amendments to the Traffic Act were approved to improve road safety and ease of travel. Vehicles with repeated traffic violations may be auctioned, and government vehicles will face strict penalties for breaking traffic laws.

A 30-day grace period will address wrong-way driving, while U-turns are being redesigned for safer traffic flow. Compensation (diyat) will now be provided promptly to families of road accident victims. Marriage halls without parking areas will no longer receive construction approval, and underage driving will face strict penalties, including imprisonment of up to six months.

Timeline and Expectations

CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the deadline for reforms is critical to ensure swift implementation. She urged officials to meet timelines and implement the reforms fully within three months.

The deadline for reforms aims to create a safer and more reliable policing system, improve traffic management, and strengthen public confidence in law enforcement across Punjab.

Officials say these measures will not only enhance road safety but also modernize police operations, promote transparency, and build trust between citizens and the police.
