Strict Action Announced Over Govt Installations Misuse in Punjab

Govt of Punjab has approved the Punjab Public Utilities Infrastructure Protection Ordinance 2026. The new law aims to protect public property and prevent theft or damage.

Officials say it will strengthen accountability. Under the ordinance, anyone damaging government installations will face strict penalties. Government installations include manhole covers, streetlights, protective fences, and other public facilities. The Govt has expanded legal coverage to include stronger protection for these assets.

Theft of government installations will result in 1 to 3 years of imprisonment. Offenders will also face fines ranging from Rs 200,000 to Rs 3,000,000.

Unauthorized removal or trading of installations will also be punished. Such acts carry 1 to 3 years of jail and fines between Rs 500,000 and Rs 3,000,000.

Damage to government property will lead to 3 months to 1 year of imprisonment. In these cases, fines will range from Rs 50,000 to Rs 200,000.

The law also targets scrap dealers and re-rolling plants involved in illegal trade. Those found buying or selling stolen government installations may face up to 3 years in prison.

Fines for these violations range from Rs 1,000,000 to Rs 10,000,000. Repeat offenders will face harsher punishment. They may receive 3 to 6 years of imprisonment. Fines for repeat violations can range from Rs 300,000 to Rs 10,000,000.

Officials say the law is part of the Govt strategy to crack down on organized groups and illegal networks. The ordinance was approved under the direction of the Chief Minister of Punjab.

Authorities want to stop mafias involved in stealing and selling public infrastructure. In cases where damage leads to loss of life, provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code will also apply.
