LAHORE: The Punjab govt has successfully collected Rs4 billion through traffic fines and license fees as part of its road safety initiatives. The move aims to reduce traffic violations and protect citizens.
Officials reported a significant drop in challans, from 60,000 to 35,000, within just one week. The reduction reflects stricter enforcement and awareness campaigns across the province. No fatal accidents have been recorded in 29 cities following recent amendments to the Motor Vehicle Ordinance.
The Punjab govt plans to implement a new point system for driving licenses starting next month. The system will track violations and penalize repeat offenders, encouraging responsible driving.
In another development, the government has proposed issuing smart cards and motorcycle licenses to 16-year-olds. The age limit reduction aims to allow young citizens to drive legally under supervision. The proposal has been sent to the Punjab cabinet for approval. Officials confirmed that applicants in this age group will now be able to obtain both smart cards and licenses.
To ensure road safety, the Punjab govt is introducing modern tools such as drones and body cameras for traffic monitoring. Parents are being urged to teach their children the importance of helmets and traffic rules. Authorities have clarified that first-time helmet violations will result in a warning ticket, rather than strict fines.
Traffic police have also been instructed to maintain respectful conduct while performing duties. The administration emphasized the importance of public cooperation and discouraging misconduct during enforcement activities.
Earlier, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz halted arrests of underage students for traffic violations. She criticized the use of handcuffs on minors and highlighted the role of parents in ensuring road safety compliance.
The Chief Minister stated that traffic regulations are designed to protect lives. She encouraged citizens to follow rules and adopt safer habits while driving. The initiatives of the Punjab govt are part of a broader strategy to enhance road safety and reduce accidents across the province.
