The Government of Punjab has stepped up efforts to tackle rising air pollution by targeting outdated and high-emission vehicles across the province.
Officials confirmed that a vehicle buyback program is being developed, under which owners of old vehicles will be encouraged to retire them voluntarily. In return, the government plans to offer subsidies to help citizens purchase newer, environmentally friendly vehicles.
The initiative is part of a broader push to improve air quality and modernize the transport sector. Authorities believe that removing older vehicles from roads will significantly reduce harmful emissions and promote cleaner mobility options.
According to sources, the project will be financed through a loan exceeding $4 million, with support from the World Bank. The Transport and Mass Transit Department of Punjab will oversee implementation and ensure smooth execution of the program.
Work is currently underway to establish a legal framework under the DLI-8 program, which will define the rules, incentives, and procedures for vehicle owners participating in the scheme. The program is expected to move forward once final approval is granted.
An initial feasibility study is set to be completed within six months, after which the project may be launched later this year. The initiative aims to reduce pollution levels, improve environmental conditions, and encourage a shift toward cleaner transportation across Punjab.
