Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province for five days following reported security threats. The restrictions will remain effective from September 13 to September 17.

The decision comes after security agencies raised concerns about possible attacks on crowded public gatherings. The provincial government has introduced several temporary restrictions as a precaution.

According to the Punjab Home Department, large gatherings will not be allowed during this period. The display or carrying of weapons in public places has also been prohibited.

The notification was issued after reports from law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Officials said these reports indicated potential risks to public safety.

Under the order, gatherings involving five or more people are prohibited at public places. The restriction also applies to highways and open areas across Punjab.

Rallies, demonstrations, processions, sit-ins and other public assemblies are covered by the restrictions. People are also barred from encouraging participation in prohibited gatherings.

Security Concerns Behind Section 144

Officials said intelligence assessments highlighted possible threats from terrorist groups. Authorities fear crowded public events could become potential targets.

Large rallies, demonstrations and public meetings may pose greater security risks under the current situation. Law enforcement agencies therefore recommended immediate preventive measures.

Following these recommendations, the Punjab Home Secretary imposed Section 144 under the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898. The restrictions were introduced under Section 144(6).

The order also prohibits people from publicly displaying or carrying weapons. These measures will remain in place throughout the five-day period.

However, several activities are exempt from the restrictions.

Weddings, funeral prayers and burials can continue during the period. Mosques and other places of worship are also excluded from the restrictions.

Courts and government offices will continue operating normally. Events that have received official approval are also exempt.

Security and law enforcement personnel performing official duties will not be affected by the weapons restrictions.

The Home Department described the measures as precautionary. Authorities said protecting citizens and their property remains the government’s main priority.
