The Punjab government has expanded its major housing program to support larger households across the province. The initiative, known as the Joint Family Scheme, is part of the existing “Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar” housing project.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced the expansion to help families living together in traditional joint family systems. The updated program aims to improve housing conditions while preserving shared family living.
Under the Joint Family Scheme, families living under one roof can apply for interest-free loans. These loans will help households expand existing homes or construct new spaces. The goal is to provide better living conditions for families with multiple generations.
Officials say the program is not a completely new project. Instead, it expands the scope of the ongoing Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar housing scheme. The new policy focuses specifically on households that follow the joint family lifestyle.
Punjab has a long tradition of families living together. Parents, children, grandparents, and relatives often share the same home. However, rising property prices and population growth have created housing challenges.
The government believes the Joint Family Scheme can address these challenges. By offering financial assistance, authorities hope to reduce pressure on families struggling with limited space and resources.
One of the main benefits of the program is interest-free housing loans. Families will only need to repay the principal amount. No interest or additional markup will be charged on the funds.
Repayment will also be designed to remain affordable. Families can return the loan through easy monthly installments over a set period.
The Punjab government has also set an ambitious housing target. Officials plan to support the construction or improvement of about 160,000 homes by June 2026.
In addition, support will be provided to families who do not own land. Around 1,534 plots will be distributed under the related “Apni Zameen, Apna Ghar” initiative. These plots will be allotted through a transparent lottery system.
Cities included in the first phase include Jhelum, Kasur, Faisalabad, and Lodhran. More districts may be added in later phases of the program.
Authorities report strong public interest in the housing project. More than 1.88 million families have registered under the broader program so far.
About 1.06 million applications are currently under review by government departments. Meanwhile, nearly 67,000 houses have already been completed under the housing initiative.
Loan disbursements have reached about PKR 164.66 billion. Officials say the recovery rate is close to 99 percent, showing strong repayment performance.
To apply for the Joint Family Scheme, applicants must be residents of Punjab and belong to a joint family household. They must also provide valid identification and proof of family structure.
