Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced that all city public transport services will now be free public transport for citizens. The move comes amid rising petrol prices, offering immediate relief to the public.
The scheme covers major services, including the Orange Line Train, Metro Bus, Speedo Bus, and Green Electro Bus. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said this initiative is part of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharifโs national savings and austerity program in Punjab. She described the plan as a historic step to protect citizens during challenging global economic conditions.
In addition to free public transport, the government is providing financial support to farmers and motorcycle owners. Farmers will receive a diesel subsidy of Rs100 per liter per acre. Registered motorcycle riders will get Rs100 for every 20 liters of fuel purchased.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for ensuring petroleum supply and stable prices in Pakistan for one month, despite global crises. She said billions of rupees in relief have been provided to help citizens cope with the rising cost of living.
The Chief Minister urged citizens to prefer free public transport over personal vehicles, stressing that Pakistanโs reliance on imported oil makes the country particularly vulnerable to global price shocks. She emphasized that the government remains committed to reducing financial pressure on households as economic conditions improve.
Officials said the program is designed to make commuting easier for daily travelers, workers, and students. By providing free public transport, authorities aim to promote sustainable travel while offering economic relief.
This initiative marks a significant effort by the Punjab government to support citizens during a period of high fuel costs. It also reinforces the national strategy to encourage public transport and reduce dependency on private vehicles.
