Punjab CM Asserts Property Ownership Guarantees Right To Possession

Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced a major initiative to safeguard property rights, stating that no one will be allowed to snatch anyone’s land in Punjab anymore. She emphasized that the Punjab government stands with every weak person β€œlike a mother,” ensuring that rightful owners retain full possession of their property.

Maryam Nawaz highlighted that for ordinary citizens, a small piece of land represents their entire world, yet land mafias have often taken it away through illegal means. To address this long-standing issue, the chief minister approved the Punjab Protection of Ownership of Immovable Property Ordinance 2025, a law designed to permanently curb land encroachment across the province.

Under this new ordinance, Dispute Resolution Committees will be established in every district of Punjab to resolve land possession disputes swiftly. Each case will be decided within 90 days, while appeals will be heard by a special tribunal led by a retired High Court judge, who will also be required to issue a verdict within 90 days.

During a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, it was decided that the committees would handle possession cases before they even reach the courts. This step is aimed at providing speedy justice to citizens who have struggled for years to reclaim their property.

The six-member District Settlement Committee will be headed by the Deputy Commissioner, with the District Police Officer and other officials as members. The committees will be operational within 30 days and will be legally bound to recover land from encroachers within 24 hours after a decision is made.

Officials also discussed hiring the PERA force to assist in recovering public land and proposed creating digital land records and live-streaming hearings on social media to ensure full transparency.

The Punjab Protection of Ownership of Immovable Property Ordinance 2025 marks a major step toward restoring citizens’ trust in the justice system and eliminating land grabbing from the province once and for all.
