The Punjab government has unveiled a proposal to construct a new airport in Lahore, aiming to expand the region’s aviation capacity and boost economic growth. According to officials, the new airport project has been planned by the Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA), which has identified a site near Ravi City, close to the M-3 Motorway.
The new airport project would be located roughly 30 kilometres from the existing Allama Iqbal International Airport. Authorities believe the additional airport would help ease traffic congestion at Lahore’s main air hub, which currently handles a growing number of domestic and international flights each year.
Officials said consultations are ongoing regarding the project’s cost, design, and financing model. The new airport project is still in the early planning stage, with several feasibility studies and environmental assessments expected before construction begins.
While no specific timeline has been announced, provincial authorities said the proposed airport would bring significant benefits to the region. It is expected to create thousands of new jobs, attract foreign investment, and improve Lahore’s connectivity with other major cities in Pakistan and beyond.
Experts note that the development of an additional airport in Lahore could also encourage new business opportunities, particularly in logistics, hospitality, and infrastructure. With the city’s rapid population growth and increasing air traffic demand, a new aviation hub could serve as a long-term solution to the challenges faced by Allama Iqbal International Airport.
The Punjab government has not yet confirmed funding details or partnerships for the project but emphasized that planning and coordination with relevant federal departments are under way. If approved, the initiative would mark a major step forward in the province’s infrastructure and urban expansion strategy.
