The Punjab government is reviewing new proposals to reduce fuel consumption across the province. Officials have suggested several measures, including expanding Work-From-Home arrangements for government employees.
According to officials from the Energy Department, government meetings may soon be held online instead of in person. Authorities believe that encouraging Work-From-Home policies can reduce daily travel and help lower petrol consumption.
The proposal also includes changes in the education sector. Universities and colleges may shift many lectures to online platforms. Schools and private academies could adopt a hybrid system. Under this model, students would attend classes on campus only a few days each week.
If approved, many employees and students may rely more on digital platforms. The Work-From-Home plan is designed to reduce traffic congestion and fuel usage during peak hours.
Authorities are also planning to expand public transportation services. Officials want to increase the frequency of the Orange Line Metro and Metro Bus services. The goal is to encourage more people to use public transport instead of private vehicles.
Energy-saving steps during nighttime are also being considered. Streetlights may operate in alternate mode after 10 PM to reduce electricity consumption. High-intensity LED billboards and neon advertising signs may also be switched off at night.
Decorative lighting on buildings could also be restricted. Officials believe these steps could help manage the energy crisis while reducing electricity demand.
The proposals come as petrol prices in Pakistan have reached the highest level in South Asia. Petrol now costs Rs321.17 per litre, creating concern among businesses and households.
Transporters have already increased freight charges by about 20 percent due to rising fuel costs. This increase could push food and commodity prices higher in the coming weeks.
Public transport fares are also rising, making travel more expensive for many citizens. Economic experts warn that continued fuel price increases could raise inflation further.
Supporters believe the Work-From-Home strategy could help reduce pressure on fuel supplies. Critics, however, argue that such measures may disrupt daily routines.
The Punjab government is reviewing these proposals carefully before making a final decision. If approved, the policies could significantly change work, travel, and education patterns across the province.
