LAHORE – The Punjab government has decided to withdraw 20-kilogram flour bags from the market and introduce smaller 10kg packs across the province. The decision forms part of its efforts to manage food prices and improve wheat supply controls.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting to review food prices and agricultural priorities. Commissioners and deputy commissioners from across Punjab attended the meeting. Officials discussed wheat cultivation targets, market conditions and other administrative matters.

Under the new decision, 10kg flour bags will replace the existing 20kg packs in the market. The change is expected to alter how flour is packaged and sold across Punjab. However, the briefing did not specify when the new packaging arrangement would take effect.

The meeting also focused on preventing wheat and flour smuggling across provincial borders. Maryam Nawaz directed authorities to strengthen monitoring at interprovincial checkpoints. She instructed deputy commissioners to ensure their respective districts achieve the assigned wheat sowing targets.

The government aims to monitor wheat movement and support the province’s agricultural planning. Stronger border checks are intended to discourage the unauthorised movement of wheat and flour. Officials are expected to oversee implementation through their respective districts.

During the meeting, officials also presented an update on essential food prices. According to the briefing, prices of 15 essential items had remained stable. These included vegetables, pulses and other commonly used commodities.

Prices of another 10 items were reportedly declining. The briefing stated that some commodities had recorded reductions of up to 252%. However, the available information did not identify the specific items or explain how these reductions were calculated.

The meeting also approved plans to upgrade the Qeemat App. The application is used for monitoring prices of essential commodities. Its proposed improvements aim to strengthen price monitoring and help maintain stability in local markets. Preparations for the upcoming Ramadan period were another key part of the discussion. The chief minister directed officials to make advance arrangements for essential seasonal fruits. These include bananas, apples and dates.

Authorities were instructed to ensure these fruits remain available at controlled prices during Ramadan. Advance planning is intended to help officials manage demand and monitor market conditions during the period.

The decisions reflect the Punjab government’s focus on food price monitoring, wheat management and agricultural production. The withdrawal of 20kg flour bags and introduction of 10kg packs will be implemented alongside these broader measures.
