Heavy monsoon rains and rising river waters have hit Punjab hard. Schools closed indefinitely in several Punjab districts due to floods now marks the grim reality. The floods began after intense rain and controlled water release from dams.
The swollen rivers Satluj, Beas, Ravi, and Ujh overflowed. Many villages and farmlands are now submerged. Rescue teamsโincluding the Army, BSF, and NDRFโare working to evacuate trapped residents. At least seven districts are severely affected.
In a precautionary move, the Chief Minister announced that schools closed indefinitely in several Punjab districts due to floods. This applies to all government and private schools from August 27 onward.
The affected districts include Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Amritsar, Fazilka, Bathinda, Jalandhar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Sangrur, and Ludhiana.
In Fazilka district, schools in 20 flood-affected border villages have been closed until the flood danger recedes.
Local administrations have set up flood control centers in Jalandhar to coordinate rescue and relief operations. The military and state disaster forces are deeply engaged in life-saving missions.
The ongoing closure is to protect students and school staff. The floods have disrupted daily life, damaged infrastructure, and cut off basic services. School buildings may also be at risk in submerged areas.
Authorities continue to assess the situation. They have not yet announced when schools might reopen. The state government remains on alert, monitoring weather forecasts and river levels closely.
