LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced detailed plans for Basant 2026, scheduled in Lahore from February 6 to February 8. The government aims to revive the traditional spring festival while ensuring public safety across the city.
During a high-level review meeting, the chief minister said all departments will work together to make the event safe and well-managed. She stressed that Basant should return as a cultural celebration without risking lives or property.
To control illegal kite flying, the government has announced strict penalties. Anyone caught flying kites before the festival dates will face a fine of Rs2 million. Authorities will also take strong action against the use of dangerous strings. Those found using harmful kite strings may face up to five years in prison along with heavy fines.
The sale and use of โCharkhiโ strings will remain completely banned. Officials confirmed a zero-tolerance policy for unsafe kite materials. The maximum allowed kite size will be 35 inches. Reels will not exceed 40 inches in size. These limits aim to reduce accidents and injuries during Basant 2026.
Traffic management will be a major focus during the festival. The chief minister directed authorities to ensure smooth movement across Lahore. Around 100 traffic police camps will be set up at key locations. These camps will guide citizens and respond quickly to emergencies.
Free public transport will also be available for residents. More than 500 buses and rickshaws will operate on 24 different routes. These vehicles will offer free rides during the festival days. The move is meant to reduce traffic congestion and encourage safe travel.
For monitoring and security, two central control rooms will be established. These centers will use drone cameras and Safe City surveillance systems. Officials will monitor activities in real time to prevent violations and ensure quick response.
The chief minister also announced free protective wire for motorcycles. This initiative will cover one million motorcycles across the city. The wire will help protect riders from dangerous kite strings.
