Flood Alert Issued for Punjab Rivers

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Punjab has issued a flood warning for the province’s rivers, with heightened alert levels in effect for critical areas over the next 24 hours.

PDMA officials have indicated a potential high-level flood in the Marala, Khanki, and Qadirabad regions along the Chenab River.

Floodwater levels are projected to increase significantly, from 200,000 to 250,000 cusecs, following water releases by India. Residents near the Qadirabad Barrage are being urged to move to safer locations due to rapidly rising water levels.

Additionally, the Ravi River is expected to see flows between 40,000 and 55,000 cusecs at Jassar and Shahdara, prompting a low-level flood warning. Moderate flooding is already occurring in Nullah Baeen and low-level flooding persists in Palku, with a similar warning issued for the Indus River.

In response, the PDMA and local authorities are on high alert. PDMA DG Irfan Ali Kathia has confirmed that all preparations are in place and has issued specific instructions to the administrations in the affected areas to stay vigilant.

Alerts have been sent to commissioners and deputy commissioners across multiple divisions in Punjab. Emergency control rooms and Rescue 1122 teams are fully operational and ready to address any emergencies.

Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to evacuate their homes and livestock to reduce risks and contact the PDMA emergency helpline at 1129 for assistance.
