Punjab Braces for Heavy Monsoon Rains, Flood Warnings Issued Until July 25

The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has announced that monsoon rains will affect most districts of Punjab starting Monday. This rainfall is part of the fourth monsoon spell of the season, which is expected to last until July 25. According to a PDMA spokesperson, this phase of monsoon rains is stronger than previous spells, potentially leading to significant weather challenges across the region.

The monsoon rains are expected to increase water flow in the upper catchment areas of rivers, raising concerns about potential flooding. The PDMA has issued flood alerts for the rivers and streams in Punjab, particularly along the Ravi, Jhelum, Sutlej, and Chenab rivers. Officials have warned that the rising water levels could lead to flooding in these areas, posing risks to local communities and infrastructure.

To mitigate these risks, the PDMA director general has instructed all deputy commissioners to remain in the field and enforce Section 144 around riverbanks and streams. This legal measure is designed to prevent people from gathering in these dangerous areas during the heightened risk period.

Additionally, the Punjab Police have been directed to enhance patrolling efforts along these rivers and streams to monitor and prevent emergencies that may arise due to the monsoon rains. The heightened surveillance aims to ensure public safety and prevent any untoward incidents.

Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and adhere to any safety measures put in place by local authorities. With the ongoing monsoon rains and the risk of rising water levels, caution is urged for all those living in vulnerable regions of Punjab.
