Alarming Rise: Six Die from Rabies in Karachi as Dog Bite Cases Surge

Karachi has reported six deaths from rabies following dog bites between May and August, hospital officials confirmed on Friday.

According to medical authorities, three victims were treated at Jinnah Hospital, while three others received care at Korangi’s Trust Hospital. Across Sindh, the total number of rabies-related deaths this year has reached 14, with eight at Jinnah Hospital and six at Trust Hospital.

Health officials revealed that over 22,000 dog bite cases have been reported so far this year, highlighting the growing public health concern.

Many victims, however, do not seek medical care and rely on home remedies, putting themselves at high risk of developing rabies, which is 100% fatal once symptoms appear.

Experts stress that dog bite victims must visit public healthcare facilities immediately and follow standard treatment protocols to prevent the deadly disease. Awareness campaigns are crucial, especially since rabies cases rise during summer months in Pakistan.

Studies show that extreme heat increases dog activity, leading to more bites and higher chances of rabies transmission. Stray dogs are also more likely to become rabid during warmer months.

Rabies is an acute infectious zoonotic disease affecting the central nervous system. It can infect nearly all mammals, including humans.

The virus spreads through bites, scratches, or contact with saliva from infected animals. Once a person is bitten by a rabid animal, the virus travels to the nerves, then the spinal cord, and eventually damages the brain, leading to death.

Symptoms of rabies include convulsions, inability to move, strange behavior, and hydrophobia, an extreme fear of water. Public health experts urge residents to take preventive measures, avoid dog bites, and report all incidents to healthcare facilities promptly.

Rabies remains one of the most neglected diseases in Pakistan, with an estimated 2,000 to 5,000 cases and deaths annually. Proper awareness, timely treatment, and responsible animal management are vital to controlling this fatal disease.
