The Rawalpindi Education Department has announced a new update regarding school admissions. The department has revised the Age Criteria for students applying to government schools. This change has raised concerns about possible impacts on enrollment.
Officials say the revised Age Criteria aims to standardize student admission levels across all grades. However, the decision comes after a delay in the admission process. This delay has already affected overall enrollment trends in government schools.
Private schools in the region started admissions on January 15. In contrast, government schools began the process on April 1. This gap has created a noticeable difference in admission progress.
Under the updated policy, the Age Criteria for each class has been clearly defined. For early childhood classes, ECCE requires a minimum age of 3 years. Pre-primary (Prep) students must be at least 4 years old. Grade 1 requires a minimum age of 5 years.
For higher classes, the structure continues in a step-by-step format. Grade 2 requires 6 years, while Grade 3 requires 7 years. Grade 4 requires 8 years, and Grade 5 requires 9 years of age.
The Age Criteria for middle classes has also been set. Grade 6 requires 10 years, Grade 7 requires 11 years, and Grade 8 requires 12 years. Grade 9 requires students to be 13 years old. Grade 10 requires a minimum age of 14 years or above.
Authorities have also issued an important instruction for board-level students. They stated that students must be at least 13 years old at the time of registration for Grade 9 examinations.
Education officials have advised parents to carefully review the updated Age Criteria before applying. They believe this will help avoid admission issues later in the process.
However, some concerns remain among parents and school administrators. They fear that strict Age Criteria rules may reduce the number of eligible students for certain classes. This could further slow down enrollment in government schools.

Despite concerns, the department maintains that the revised system will improve structure and academic planning. The Age Criteria policy is expected to bring more uniformity across all public schools in Rawalpindi.
