Lahore — The prosecution has filed an appeal challenging Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s acquittal in the May 9 case. The Punjab government initiated the legal challenge through the Special Prosecutor General Punjab.
A two-member bench of the Lahore High Court, comprising Justice Syed Shahbaz Ali Rizvi and Justice Tariq Mehmood, is scheduled to hear the appeal. The hearing is expected to focus on the evidence presented during the initial trial and the reasoning behind the acquittal.
Earlier this year, an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore had acquitted Qureshi and five other Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders in connection with the May 9 riots. The court cited insufficient evidence in clearing the accused. Meanwhile, ten other PTI leaders, including Dr. Yasmin Rashid, were sentenced to ten years in prison for their involvement in violence following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The prosecution’s appeal argues that the ATC’s decision was flawed and requests the Lahore High Court to overturn Qureshi’s acquittal. Legal experts say the outcome of this appeal could set an important precedent for other cases related to the May 9 incidents.
Political observers are closely monitoring developments, noting that the case has significant implications for the PTI leadership and broader political dynamics in the country.
As the Lahore High Court prepares to hear the appeal, officials expect a detailed review of all evidence and testimonies presented during the original trial. The proceedings will clarify the judicial reasoning behind the initial acquittals and determine whether the prosecution’s challenge will succeed.
The prosecution challenges Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s acquittal in May 9 case at a critical juncture, highlighting the continuing legal and political ramifications of the May 9 events.
