The federal government’s special Petrol Relief scheme has officially started in Islamabad. The initiative provides eligible motorists with a subsidy of Rs. 100 per litre on petrol.
The scheme initially covers Islamabad residents who meet the eligibility requirements. It targets motorcycle, rickshaw, Qingqi and small-car users.
The programme became operational at midnight between September 14 and 15, 2026. The government plans to expand the scheme nationwide from the night of September 16-17.
The expansion will also cover Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Who Can Get Rs. 100 Petrol Relief?
Under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s scheme, motorcycle users can receive Rs. 100 relief per litre. The same benefit is available to eligible rickshaw and Qingqi users.
These consumers can receive subsidised petrol for up to 20 litres each month. Small-car owners are also included in the programme.
Vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc can receive the subsidy on 30 litres monthly.
The Petrol Relief programme mainly targets lower-income and middle-class consumers affected by higher fuel costs.
How to Register for the Petrol Scheme
The government has introduced an SMS-based registration system for the programme. This means applicants do not need a smartphone or an internet connection.
Applicants must send their CNIC number and vehicle number plate to 9771. They must also provide their vehicle’s province of registration and registration date.
The message must be sent from a mobile SIM registered in the applicant’s own name. The government has ordered that SMS charges for registration should be waived.
Vehicle information will be checked through provincial transport and Excise departments.
The verification system is designed to prevent fraudulent registrations and ensure benefits reach eligible motorists.
How to Get a Fuel Token
Successfully registered users must complete another step before buying subsidised petrol.
Eligible consumers need to send “TOK” to 9771 before visiting a participating petrol station.
The system will then provide a fuel token. Consumers must present their token at the petrol station to receive fuel at the subsidised rate.
The digital process is intended to make the distribution system easier to monitor.
Scheme Could Cost Up to Rs. 30 Billion Monthly
The government expects the fuel subsidy programme to cost between Rs. 25 billion and Rs. 30 billion monthly.
Officials say digital verification will improve transparency and reduce the possibility of misuse.
The Petrol Relief initiative is designed to provide targeted assistance instead of offering the subsidy to every motorist.
Following its Islamabad launch, eligible consumers elsewhere in Pakistan are expected to gain access from September 16-17.
