RIYADH: Two Saudi military officers have died after a National Guard helicopter crashed in the southwestern Najran region of Saudi Arabia.

Saudi authorities said the aircraft experienced a technical problem before the crash. The incident involved an AH-6i Little Bird helicopter used for reconnaissance and light military operations.

Major General Turki Al-Malki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, announced the incident through the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Both officers aboard the aircraft lost their lives. Authorities did not immediately release their names or further personal information.

Technical Malfunction Reported in Saudi Helicopter Crash

According to the Saudi announcement, the helicopter crashed because of a technical malfunction.

The AH-6i Little Bird is a small military helicopter designed for reconnaissance and light-attack missions. The aircraft can support military operations in areas where quick movement and observation are important.

The crash occurred in an area linked to the Saudi Ministry of the National Guard. However, officials did not provide the exact location of the accident.

The initial announcement also did not include detailed technical findings explaining what caused the aircraft to malfunction.

Houthi Forces Make Separate Helicopter Claim

The incident followed a separate statement from Yemen’s Houthi movement.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed that the group’s forces had shot down a Saudi AH-64 Apache helicopter.

He said the aircraft was operating near Najran along the Saudi-Yemeni border. Saree also alleged that the helicopter was carrying out military operations against Houthi positions.

However, Saudi authorities have not independently confirmed the Houthi claim. The aircraft identified in the Saudi announcement was an AH-6i Little Bird, not an AH-64 Apache.

It remains unclear whether the two reports concern the same incident or separate events.

Najran Remains a Sensitive Border Region

Najran is located in southwestern Saudi Arabia near the border with Yemen. The region has faced security concerns because of the long-running conflict in neighboring Yemen.

Previous incidents have included reported drone attacks, missile threats, and military activity near the border. The latest incident has again drawn attention to security conditions in the area.

Reports involving military Helicopter Crashes are particularly significant because Najran lies close to an active conflict zone.

However, no verified evidence currently establishes a connection between the reported technical failure and the Houthi allegation.

Saudi Arabia and Yemen Conflict Background

The Saudi-led coalition has been involved in Yemen’s conflict for several years.

The fighting has involved Saudi-backed forces and the Houthi movement, which controls parts of Yemen. Regional tensions have also involved concerns about missile attacks, drones, and border security.

Saudi Arabia has previously reported intercepting drones and missiles targeting different areas of the kingdom.

However, these incidents should be considered separately from the Najran helicopter crash unless authorities establish a direct connection.

Authorities Yet to Release Full Investigation Details

Saudi officials have attributed the crash to a technical malfunction.

However, further information about the circumstances surrounding the accident has not been provided. The identities of the two deceased officers have also not been disclosed in the initial announcement.

The incident remains an important development for Saudi military aviation and border security.
