The Supreme Court has granted bail to human rights lawyer Imaan Mazari and her husband Hadi Ali Chattha.

The court granted the relief while the Islamabad High Court continues hearing their case. The development came during a hearing on Thursday.

The couple had sought suspension of their sentences in a case involving controversial social media posts. They were sentenced to a combined 17 years in January 2026.

The prosecution had linked their social media posts to an alleged anti-state narrative. The charges were brought under cybercrime laws.

The Supreme Court’s latest order allows the couple to secure their release on bail. Their legal proceedings, however, are still continuing before the Islamabad High Court.

The IHC had earlier fixed September 8 for hearing their sentence suspension applications. The hearing was later adjourned without substantial proceedings.

The case has remained pending through several stages of litigation. The Supreme Court had previously directed the high court to decide the suspension applications.

The IHC later declared the applications maintainable. It dismissed a prosecution objection challenging the maintainability of the petitions.

However, the high court proceedings were again delayed. The latest hearing was adjourned after the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency prosecutor was unavailable.

Imaan and Hadi were arrested on January 23, 2026. A sessions court later sentenced them under several provisions of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act.

Their sentences included terms under provisions related to cyber terrorism, glorification of an offence and false information. The court also imposed financial penalties as part of the sentences.

The couple challenged their convictions before the Islamabad High Court. Their lawyers have also approached the Supreme Court during the proceedings.

Their legal team has argued that procedural safeguards were not properly followed during the trial. The prosecution has defended the proceedings and challenged some of the relief sought.

The latest bail order does not end the underlying case. The couple’s appeals and sentence-related proceedings remain subject to further court decisions.

The Supreme Court’s decision provides a path for their release while the legal process continues. The final outcome of their appeals will determine the next stage of the case.

The case has attracted attention from legal and human rights groups. Their proceedings have also generated debate over cybercrime laws and due process.

For now, Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha remain involved in ongoing legal proceedings. Their release on bail does not amount to a final decision on their convictions.
