The Supreme Court of Pakistan has SC orders granting PTI founder Imran Khan access to eye specialists. The court also allowed him to communicate with his children via phone.
The ruling was made during a health-related hearing, where Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and Barrister Salman Safdar appeared. A two-judge bench, led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan, reviewed a report on Khan’s health and jail conditions.
According to the report, Khan praised the security and food arrangements in jail. However, he highlighted that medical facilities were inadequate and requested specialized eye care.
Chief Justice Afridi emphasized that all prisoners must receive equal medical treatment. He clarified that Khan should not get preferential treatment over other inmates. The principle of equality must guide medical care for all detainees.
Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan assured the court that the government would facilitate Khan’s access to eye specialists. Following the assurance, the court confirmed its SC orders for both medical care and phone communication with Khan’s children.
The court appointed a team of eye specialists to examine Khan. Both measures are to be implemented by February 16. A request to allow a family member during medical consultations was rejected. However, the court approved the access to specialists without family presence.
Regarding books, the court stated that they could only be provided if permitted by medical authorities, considering Khan’s eye condition. Chief Justice Afridi reiterated that the state must provide adequate healthcare to prisoners. Any dissatisfaction should be addressed promptly.
Legal observers noted that the SC orders reflect a balance between prisoner rights and state responsibilities. The court ensured that Khan receives proper medical care without violating principles of fairness.
With these measures, Imran Khan will have access to specialized eye treatment and maintain contact with his children. The implementation deadline set by the court ensures timely action and accountability.
