KARACHI: Heavy rainfall on Tuesday caused Shahrah-e-Faisal flooding at the Star Gate area, disrupting traffic on one of the city’s main roads. Authorities quickly began drainage operations to reduce the water levels and help commuters.
The rain also caused Malir and Lyari streams to swell. In some low-lying areas, floodwaters entered residential neighborhoods, forcing families to move to safer places. Water levels along the Lyari stream continued to rise, threatening more homes.
A major surge of floodwater reached the Lyari Expressway, where two people were swept away but later rescued. Floodwaters carried household belongings and even entered a mosque in Nishtar Basti. Residents reported severe damage to homes and appealed for immediate rescue.
In Hassan Noman Colony near Sohrab Goth, water levels rose to alarming heights. Residents called on authorities for help as rescue efforts intensified. Volunteers from Edhi, Chhipa, and Rescue 1122 worked tirelessly to evacuate those trapped. Meanwhile, police and traffic officials managed road safety and attempted to prevent further accidents.
Despite the worsening situation, government officials, local representatives, and union council members were largely absent from the most affected areas. The incident has drawn attention to Karachi’s vulnerability to urban flooding during heavy rainfall.
Authorities urged residents to avoid low-lying areas and stay alert as more rainfall is expected. Citizens were advised to follow updates from local rescue teams to ensure safety.
