The Sindh High Court (SHC) has directed authorities to provide a detailed report on the condition and care of animals at Karachi Zoo. The order came days after the court approved the relocation of Rano, a female Himalayan brown bear, to a sanctuary for urgent medical treatment.
The courtβs move follows growing public concern over alleged animal neglect and poor management at one of Pakistanβs oldest zoos. Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro, who led the hearing, demanded a comprehensive report on each animalβs health, psychological state, and living environment. He also ordered an evaluation of the zooβs staff qualifications and potential plans to relocate other animals if facilities are found inadequate.
Lawyer and activist Jibran Nasir, representing petitioner Jude Allen Pereira, said the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) was asked to submit staff details. A committee formed earlier by the Sindh government to oversee Ranoβs transfer will now assess the overall state of the zoo. The provincial government was also instructed to inspect the premises and review animal welfare standards.
Nasir praised the courtβs decision, calling it a major victory for animal rights in Pakistan. He credited campaigners, experts, and media outlets for bringing national attention to Ranoβs case.
Barrister Asad Ahmed, representing KMC, confirmed that Rano would first be shifted to Islamabad and later to Gilgit for rehabilitation. He said the transfer would be carried out with expert supervision. Wildlife conservationist Javed Mehar added that the bear could be moved either by road or air, similar to past successful relocations.
Justice Kalhoro expressed deep concern over the zooβs poor conditions, stating that βzoos should be abolished and animals should live in natural habitats.β He criticised the lack of veterinary care, pointing out that only one veterinarian served the entire zoo.
The Sindh High Court also questioned why Rano had been kept in such distress for years, calling it an example of systemic neglect. The bench adjourned the hearing for two weeks, ordering a detailed progress report on Ranoβs relocation and the welfare of all animals at Karachi Zoo.
Animal rights advocates hailed the Sindh High Court ruling as a turning point for wildlife protection and accountability in Pakistan.
