Punjab CM Exempts Sikh Community from Helmet Law in Inclusive Move

Punjab CM Exempts Sikh Community from Helmet Law in Inclusive Move

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced an exemption for the Sikh community from the motorcycle helmet law, citing religious and practical concerns linked to wearing turbans.

Addressing a public ceremony in Lahore, Maryam Nawaz said Sikh riders would not be required to wear helmets while riding motorcycles. She explained that the turban, which is a core part of Sikh religious identity, makes it difficult to comply with the helmet law. The decision, she said, reflects respect for religious practices and aims to ensure inclusivity.

The chief minister emphasized that the exemption does not undermine road safety. Instead, it acknowledges a genuine challenge faced by the Sikh community. She added that the government remains committed to promoting safety while also protecting minority rights.

During her address, Maryam Nawaz also announced an expansion of minority welfare initiatives. She revealed that the number of minority cards would be increased from 75,000 to 100,000. These cards are designed to provide financial and social support to minority families across Punjab.

Separately, the chief minister attended a Christmas event at the Cathedral Church. She congratulated the Christian community on Christmas and reiterated the governmentโ€™s commitment to safeguarding minority rights. She stated that the true success of any government is measured by how secure and protected minorities feel in society.

Maryam Nawaz warned that anyone who harms minorities or violates their rights would face strict action. She said the state would use its full authority to protect vulnerable communities. According to her, equal treatment under the law is a constitutional duty.

The chief minister also ordered immediate steps to resolve long-standing issues related to burial grounds for minority communities. She said access to burial spaces is a basic right and must be ensured without delay.

Highlighting the vision of an inclusive Punjab, Maryam Nawaz urged citizens to promote tolerance and respect. She stressed that Muslims, as the majority, have a special responsibility to protect minorities.

Quoting Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), she said oppression against minorities is a serious moral and religious wrongdoing. She added that Islam teaches justice and compassion for all.

Maryam Nawaz also spoke about welfare programs such as the Dhi Rani Program, ration cards, scholarships, and farmer cards. She noted that these initiatives are offered without discrimination and are open to all citizens.
