Sindh CM Pledges Gul Plaza Rebuilding, Tackles Pre-18th Amendment Issues

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has announced plans for the Gul Plaza rebuilding after the deadly fire claimed 71 lives on January 17. Speaking in the Sindh Assembly, he said the provincial government aims to reconstruct the shopping complex within two years.

CM Murad emphasised that the tragedy should not be politicised. He rejected suggestions linking the fire to the 18th Amendment, stating that many irregularities at the site predated the constitutional change. “We are still cleaning up the mess from before the 18th Amendment,” he said.

The Sindh CM provided a detailed timeline of Gul Plaza’s construction. An application for the original building was submitted in 1979, with the sale deed approved in 1983. The Karachi Building Control Authority permitted construction in the 1980s, and the lease was renewed in 1991. Later additions, including a third floor in 1998 and extra shops in 2003, were all approved before the 18th Amendment came into effect.

Regarding the Gul Plaza rebuilding, CM Murad confirmed that the damaged sections will be demolished, and the shops will be reconstructed. Owners will receive the same number of shops after reconstruction. Temporary arrangements have already been made, providing 500 shops in one building and 350 in another, with no rent for one year.

The provincial government will support shopkeepers financially. Each affected family will receive Rs10 million, while Rs500,000 will be paid immediately to each shop owner. Additionally, the government will provide collateral for loans up to Rs10 million, covering interest costs to help traders recover quickly.

CM Murad reiterated that human life is invaluable and that the government is committed to providing compensation, reconstruction, and support for all affected families. The committee tasked with assessing losses is expected to submit reports soon, ensuring transparent assistance.
