PTI Workers Released As Sindh Government Revokes MPO Detention Orders

The Government of Sindh on Tuesday withdrew several detention orders issued under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance. Authorities have directed the SSPs of concerned districts to release the detained citizens immediately.

The Constitutional Bench of the Sindh High Court had been hearing petitions challenging the detention orders against PTI workers. The court directed the Sindh government to take back the notification. Judges warned that a court order would be issued against officials if the notification was not withdrawn.

The government lawyer requested one week to submit a written order. Lawyers representing the petitioners said the detention orders had affected 187 families, creating fear and uncertainty.

The PTI had challenged the arrests of over 180 party workers under the MPO at the Sindh High Courtโ€™s constitutional bench. The arrests occurred ahead of a PTI protest scheduled for February 8.

Earlier, the Sindh home department stated that the specified individuals were apprehended to prevent disruption of law and order. The department claimed the arrested persons posed a threat to life and property. โ€œThese persons will be arrested and shifted to Malir Jail for 30 days,โ€ the statement said.

The PTIโ€™s petition argued that the arrests between Saturday and Sunday night caused panic among families. The partyโ€™s lawyer said a โ€œcrackdownโ€ had been launched in the city targeting PTI workers.

The court also issued notices to the Advocate General of Sindh and other relevant parties. Their responses have been summoned ahead of the next hearing, fixed for February 10.

The withdrawal of detention orders is seen as a significant step in resolving tensions between the Sindh government and the PTI. Officials confirmed that all detained workers would be released promptly.
