Sindh Home Minister Confirms Fair Trial in Umme Rubab Case

Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar on Tuesday stated that the Umme Rubab case verdict was reached after a trial conducted fairly. He emphasized that the Sindh government was not a party to the case.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Karachi with Sharjeel Inam Memon, the minister said the court gave both the prosecution and defense a fair chance to present their arguments.

โ€œAs a lawyer, I believe there were flaws in the evidence, but both sides received a fair opportunity, and the trial conducted was impartial,โ€ he said. He also criticized the social media backlash against the judge, calling it inappropriate.

The minister highlighted that the complainant has the legal right to appeal the verdict. He reiterated that the government had no involvement in the proceedings.

Condemning reports of aerial firing following the verdict, Lanjar directed authorities to register FIRs against those involved. โ€œNo one is above the law,โ€ he said, noting past incidents of firing outside courts. He added that the sessions judge considered the law and order situation while issuing the verdict.

The verdict, announced on Monday by a model criminal court, acquitted all eight accused in the high-profile Mehar triple murder case. The accused were linked to the killing of Umme Rubab Chandioโ€™s father, grandfather, and uncle, which occurred on January 17, 2018.

Among the acquitted were PPP leaders Sardar Ahmed Chandio and Burhan Khan Chandio, former SHO Karim Chandio, Sattar Chandio, Ali Gohar Chandio, Murtaza Chandio, Sikandar Chandio, and Zulfiqar Chandio. Strict security measures were in place during the announcement.

The attack in Mehar, Sindh, involved armed men who killed Raees Karamullah Chandio, then chairman of the Baldia Union Council, and his two sons, Mukhtiar Chandio, a district council member, and another son associated with the Tumandar Council.

Officials confirmed that a transparent legal process was followed and emphasized that the trial conducted ensured all parties had equal opportunity to present evidence. Authorities continue to monitor public response and maintain security around court proceedings.

The ministerโ€™s statement underscores the Sindh governmentโ€™s commitment to lawful procedure and the importance of upholding judicial independence.
