Southern Punjab Braces for Devastating Flood Wave as Sutlej and Chenab Rivers Rise

Southern Punjab is preparing for a massive flood wave as the Sutlej and Chenab rivers continue to swell, causing mass evacuations. Authorities warn that more than 300,000 people may be at risk in the coming hours.

Multan Faces Intensifying Flood Threat

In Multan, officials have already moved over 119,000 people to safer areas. However, the incoming flood wave could submerge hundreds of villages. A controlled breach at Head Muhammad Wala is planned to protect Multan city, with nearly 60% of residents already evacuated.

The National Emergency Operations Center predicts that Trimmu may receive 700,000–800,000 cusecs of water by August 31. Panjnad could see 650,000–700,000 cusecs by September 3.

Sutlej River at Historic Levels

The Sutlej River at Ganda Singh Wala has crossed 385,000 cusecs, the highest level since 1955. Kasur city now faces severe risk, and authorities may breach embankments to protect urban centers.

In Chunian, Okara, Bahawalnagar, Pakpattan, and Vehari, many villages have been flooded. Power supplies have been cut, and thousands are displaced.

Chenab and Ravi Rising

The Chenab River is carrying a heavy flow of 855,000 cusecs downstream. Chiniot and Trimmu Headworks are under pressure as water levels increase. The Ravi River has dropped slightly at Shahdara but continues to flood areas around Lahore, damaging nearby villages.

Widespread Devastation Across Punjab

According to the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA):

  • 1,769 villages are submerged
  • 1.23 million residents are affected
  • 248,000 people displaced
  • 148,000 animals rescued
  • 28 deaths confirmed

Rescue efforts are ongoing in Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Nankana Sahib, and Rajanpur, with the army, Rangers, and Rescue 1122 assisting.

Government Response and Relief Efforts

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered relief camps across all affected districts. These camps provide food, shelter, and medical aid. Over 265 medical camps are currently operational. Livestock and displaced families are being shifted to safer ground.

PDMA officials have criticized India for delaying water-release data. They say the delay increased losses from the flood wave across Punjab.
