Azad Jammu and Kashmir government has extended summer Holidays for educational institutions in the summer zone. The decision means students and parents will have to wait longer before schools reopen.
The Elementary and Secondary Education Department has issued fresh instructions regarding the closure. Under the order, educational institutions will remain closed from Monday, August 10, through Thursday, August 13, 2026.
The extension comes after uncertainty over whether schools would reopen according to the earlier schedule. The latest decision applies to educational institutions located in AJK’s summer zone.
When Will Schools Reopen in AJK?
Students could potentially return to classrooms on Monday, August 17. August 14 is a public holiday, followed by the weekend.
This creates a continuous break after the extended summer Holidays end on August 13. However, the Education Department has not officially confirmed August 17 as the final reopening date.
Parents and students should therefore wait for further instructions from the department. Any additional decision is expected to depend on official directions issued after August 13.
Security Situation Behind Extended Closure
The extension comes amid increased activity and security concerns in parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The third phase of local government elections is currently taking place in Bagh and Haveli districts.
Both districts are located in the Poonch Division. A protest sit-in in Rawalakot has also contributed to the prevailing situation in the region.
Authorities appear to have extended the closure to reduce possible disruption during this period. The decision also takes into account the movement and safety of students and education staff.
