The surviving baby from the tragic PIMS nursery fire remains in critical condition. Her parents have asked people across Pakistan to pray for her recovery.
The infant, identified as Ezel, is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit. Doctors are closely monitoring her condition.
Ezel’s mother, Asifa Bibi, said the baby suffered from smoke exposure. She also remains weak because of her premature birth.
Asifa said Ezel was born on August 12. The baby was delivered after a pregnancy lasting six months and 10 days.
Ezel is the couple’s first child. Her mother said the family is deeply concerned about her health.
Baby’s Condition Remains Unstable
Ezel’s father, Waqas, said her condition continues to change. He explained that she sometimes shows improvement before becoming weaker again.
The father said the baby has also received blood transfusions. However, her health has continued to deteriorate despite medical treatment.
The surviving baby remains under intensive medical care at PIMS. Her family is hoping for further improvement in her condition.
Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal also visited children receiving treatment at the hospital. He described the patients as critically ill and requiring intensive care.
The minister’s visit came after the devastating fire at the hospital’s nursery. The incident caused the deaths of several newborn babies.
PIMS Nursery Fire Kills 14 Newborns
The fire broke out in the nursery of the gynaecology ward at PIMS. Rescue sources said the incident occurred at around 6:45am.
An air-conditioning compressor reportedly exploded before the fire started. Flames quickly spread through the nursery.
Hospital authorities said 15 babies were inside the nursery when the fire began. Only one baby was rescued alive.
The other 14 newborns died in the tragic incident. Rescue teams reached the hospital soon after receiving information about the fire.
The district administration said six fire brigade vehicles joined the emergency response. Four ambulances also took part in the rescue operation.
Nurse Recalls Rescue Efforts
Nurse Razia Noreen helped rescue Ezel during the emergency. She said she also attempted to save the other newborns.
However, she could not return inside the nursery. Heavy smoke and intense flames made further rescue attempts extremely difficult.
The fire was eventually brought under control. Cooling operations continued after firefighters extinguished the flames.
The surviving baby continues to receive critical care following the tragedy. Her parents have appealed for prayers as doctors work to stabilize her condition.
The incident has raised serious concerns about safety arrangements in hospital nurseries. Authorities are expected to review the circumstances surrounding the fire.
