Rs5.7 Trillion Stuck in Courts As Pakistan’s Tax Battle Stretches Across 50,000 Cases

Rs5.7 Trillion Stuck in Courts As Pakistan’s Tax Battle Stretches Across 50,000 Cases

Pakistan’s ongoing tax battle stretches further as nearly Rs5.7 trillion in tax and customs revenues remain tied up in thousands of pending legal cases across the country.

According to figures released by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), a total of 50,732 tax and customs disputes are currently awaiting decisions in courts and tribunals. These unresolved cases involve an estimated Rs5.7 trillion, creating a major challenge for revenue collection efforts.

The latest data shows that the largest number of pending cases is before appellate tribunals. These tribunals are currently handling 27,621 cases involving approximately Rs3.383 trillion. The volume of litigation highlights how the tax battle stretches across multiple legal forums and continues to delay revenue recovery.

Officials said that 2,155 cases worth Rs58.3 billion are pending before Collectors of Adjudication. Meanwhile, Collectors of Appeals are dealing with 322 cases involving around Rs46.3 billion.

At the highest judicial level, the Supreme Court is hearing 3,961 tax and customs disputes valued at Rs184 billion. These cases represent a significant portion of the government’s pending revenue claims.

The provincial high courts are also handling a substantial number of cases. The Lahore High Court has 8,232 pending cases involving nearly Rs977 billion. The Sindh High Court is reviewing 5,521 cases worth around Rs558 billion.

Similarly, the Islamabad High Court is hearing 2,210 cases with an estimated value of Rs492 billion. The Peshawar High Court is handling 528 cases involving Rs28 billion, while the Balochistan High Court has 186 pending cases worth Rs8 billion.

Experts believe the tax battle stretches beyond simple legal disagreements and directly affects the government’s ability to collect revenue. Large amounts of funds remain unavailable until courts issue final decisions.

The unresolved disputes also create uncertainty for taxpayers and businesses involved in ongoing litigation. Many cases have remained pending for years, contributing to a growing backlog within the legal system.

The FBR continues to pursue these cases through various legal channels. However, the large number of pending matters shows the scale of the challenge facing tax authorities.

As Pakistan seeks to strengthen revenue collection and improve fiscal stability, resolving these disputes remains a key priority. Until decisions are reached, the tax battle stretches on, leaving trillions of rupees locked in legal proceedings and beyond the government’s immediate reach.
