Mirpur Mathelo Tragedy: Journalist Tufail Rand Gunned Down, Niece Dies in Shock

GHOTKI – Tufail Rand, General Secretary of the Mirpur Mathelo Press Club, was killed in a targeted attack on Jorwar Road in Mirpur Mathelo. The incident also tragically claimed the life of his eight-year-old niece.

According to police reports, Tufail Rand was taking his two children and niece to school when unidentified gunmen opened fire on their vehicle in the Masu Wah area. Rand was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was shifted to DHQ Hospital for legal formalities.

The young niece, reportedly traumatized by the attack, initially suffered minor injuries after falling during the firing. She received medical attention but tragically died while being transported home. Authorities have confirmed that a thorough investigation into the attack has been launched.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah strongly condemned the killings, emphasizing that attacks on journalists are attacks on press freedom. He directed the Sindh Inspector General of Police to provide a detailed report on the incident.

Local journalists and press bodies expressed deep grief over the loss of Tufail Rand, highlighting his dedication to the media community and his contributions to press advocacy in the region. Many activists called for swift action against those responsible, urging authorities to ensure the safety of journalists across Sindh.

Police have cordoned off the area and are reviewing CCTV footage and witness statements to identify the assailants. They have assured the public that all possible resources will be used to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The tragic death of Tufail Rand and his niece has sparked widespread mourning in Ghotki and beyond, with social media flooded with condolences and calls for stronger protection for journalists in Pakistan.
