Pakistan’s Petroleum Division has reportedly finalized plans to introduce a uniform gas tariff across the country from July 1, 2027.

The proposed reform will change the current structure of gas pricing. The government is expected to seek formal approval from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) before implementation.

Under the plan, the existing cross-subsidy system in the gas sector would be removed. This system currently allows different consumer groups to pay different rates.

The government also plans financial support for households that may face a higher burden. Around Rs162 billion has been proposed for targeted assistance.

The proposed uniform gas tariff would also replace the current 12-slab pricing system. At present, gas consumers are charged different rates based on monthly consumption.

Under the new system, consumers would pay a single average rate. The proposed rate is Rs1,708 per million British thermal units (MMBtu).

The change is part of wider efforts to restructure Pakistan’s gas pricing system. Authorities are seeking to simplify the existing tariff structure.

The government’s plan is also aimed at changing how gas subsidies are provided. Instead of broad cross-subsidies, support would focus on households requiring financial assistance.

Officials are expected to complete the necessary approval process before the proposed implementation date. IMF approval will be an important part of the process.

The planned uniform gas tariff could therefore mark a major change in the way gas prices are determined. It would move consumers away from the existing consumption-based slab structure.

However, the final implementation will depend on government decisions and the required approvals. Further details about the financial support mechanism are also expected as the reform moves forward.
