The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has expressed deep sorrow over the deadly attack at a police mosque in Kohat.
The attack claimed 21 lives, including 15 police personnel. Several others were injured in the incident.
The UNSC conveyed its condolences to the families of those killed. It also expressed sympathy for everyone affected by the attack.
The Council prayed for the speedy and full recovery of those injured. It also condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
The UNSC said terrorism remains one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.
It called on all countries to cooperate with Pakistan in the fight against terrorism. The Council also urged authorities to bring those responsible to justice.
The UNSC reiterated that every act of terrorism is criminal and unjustifiable. It stressed the need for international cooperation against terrorist threats.
The attack took place at a mosque located inside the Kohat Police Lines. An explosives-laden vehicle detonated near the mosque during Friday prayers. Armed attackers then attempted to enter the police compound.
Police and security forces launched an operation following the blast. Several attackers were killed during the ensuing exchange of fire.
According to police sources cited in initial reports, 34 injured people were receiving treatment. Four critically injured people were shifted to Peshawar for further medical care.
Later reports placed the number of injured at more than 100. This included police personnel and civilians receiving treatment at hospitals in Kohat.
The attack has drawn condemnation because the mosque was located within a police facility. Many police officers and other worshippers were present during Friday prayers.
The incident also adds to security concerns in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The province has faced repeated attacks targeting police and security personnel.
Earlier in February, Kohat also witnessed another deadly attack involving police personnel.
In that incident, unidentified gunmen attacked a police vehicle on Shakardara Road. The vehicle was carrying two accused persons under police custody.
The attackers opened fire on the police vehicle. A heavy exchange of gunfire followed the initial attack.
Five people were killed in the incident, including DSP Lachi Asad Mehmood. Investigation Inspector Anar Gul Khan and a police constable were also among those killed.
The two accused in police custody, Yousuf Khan and Samiullah, were also killed. Three Frontier Corps personnel sustained injuries in the attack.
The injured FC personnel were taken to District Headquarters Hospital for medical treatment.
Following that incident, security forces cordoned off the area. Additional police units were also sent to the location.
A search operation was launched as authorities placed the area on high alert. The measures were taken amid concerns over further security threats.
The latest Kohat mosque attack has again highlighted the security challenges facing the region. The UNSC has called for continued international cooperation against terrorism.
The Council also stressed the importance of bringing those responsible for terrorist attacks to justice.
