Unusual Weather Damages Wheat Crop in South Punjab

Unusual Weather Damages Wheat Crop in South Punjab

Unusual weather patterns in Multan and other parts of South Punjab have severely affected wheat crops, raising concerns about reduced yields this season. Farmers are now fearing significant production losses.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, temperatures in March remained around 2.7ยฐC above normal. This unexpected rise disrupted the natural growth cycle of wheat.

The early heatwave caused premature spike formation in crops, which prevented proper grain development. As a result, wheat grains are smaller in size, directly impacting overall productivity.

March is a crucial month for wheat growth, especially for grain formation. However, the unusual temperature spike disturbed this phase, leading to lower crop quality across multiple regions.

The situation worsened further in early April when unexpected rains and hailstorms damaged wheat crops on nearly 210,000 acres across South Punjab. This added to farmersโ€™ existing concerns.

Growers now fear that achieving even 30 to 35 maunds per acre may not be possible this year. This marks a significant drop compared to expected yields under normal conditions.

In addition to weather-related challenges, farmers are also dealing with rising input costs. Increased diesel prices have made cultivation and harvesting more expensive than before.

Harvesting costs per acre have nearly doubled compared to last year, placing additional financial pressure on farmers. Uncertainty in wheat market prices is also adding to their worries.

South Punjab contributes nearly 70% of Punjabโ€™s total wheat production. Any decline in output from this region could have serious implications for the agricultural economy.

Experts warn that reduced wheat production may impact national food security if the situation continues. Authorities are expected to closely monitor the situation and consider support measures.
