The United States has returned more than 450 stolen artifacts to Pakistan in a major cultural development. The move reflects growing cooperation between both countries on heritage preservation.
The returned collection was showcased at a special exhibition in Islamabad. The event was organized under a bilateral agreement between Pakistan and the United States.
Officials said the recovered stolen artifacts include ancient statues, Gandhara masterpieces, sculptures, and other valuable historical items. Some of the relics are more than 4,000 years old.
The exhibition was titled “Legacy Returns Home.” It highlighted the cultural and historical importance of the recovered treasures.
According to officials, the United States has so far returned artifacts worth nearly $23 million to Pakistan. Over the last decade, more than 500 items have been repatriated.
US representative S. Paul said every artifact carries unique cultural and historical significance. He stressed the importance of protecting global heritage from illegal trafficking.
Assistant Secretary of State S. Paul Kapoor stated that 514 cultural objects have been returned to Pakistan during the past ten years. He added that cooperation on heritage protection continues to strengthen.
Pakistan’s Minister for Culture, Aurangzeb Khichi, welcomed the return of the stolen artifacts and praised the efforts of both governments.
He said the repatriation reflects a shared commitment to preserving Pakistan’s rich cultural history. Officials from the Foreign Ministry also played an important role in the process.
The returned artifacts are now being housed at Islamabad’s Sir Syed Memorial Museum. Around 150 important pieces are currently on display for the public.
These include Buddha statues, Gandhara-era sculptures, and several rare historical relics. Experts believe the collection holds major archaeological value.
Authorities said the US Department of Homeland Security helped stop the illegal smuggling of these stolen artifacts before they entered private markets.
Cultural experts have welcomed the development and called it an important step in protecting historical heritage. They also stressed the need for stronger international cooperation against artifact trafficking.
The return of the stolen artifacts is being seen as a positive sign of growing collaboration between Pakistan and the United States in the field of cultural preservation and heritage protection.
