The United States has said it supports Pakistan’s right to self-defence amid rising tensions with the Afghan Taliban. Washington confirmed it is closely monitoring the situation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
Allison M. Hooker, US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, shared the update on social media platform X. She said she had spoken with Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary to offer condolences over recent loss of lives.
Hooker stated that the US continues to observe developments carefully. She added that Washington supports Pakistan’s right to self-defence against Taliban attacks.
A US State Department spokesperson also issued a statement. The spokesperson said the United States recognizes Pakistan’s right to self-defence against attacks from the Taliban. The Taliban is designated as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist group by the US.
The statement noted that the Taliban have failed to meet their counterterrorism commitments. It added that terrorist groups continue to use Afghan territory to launch attacks.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump commented on the escalating tensions. He said Pakistan is handling the situation “terrifically well.” He also said he would not intervene in the conflict at this time.
Speaking to reporters before departing for Texas, Trump praised Pakistan’s leadership. He expressed respect for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir.
Trump described both leaders as capable and respected. He repeated that Pakistan is managing the crisis effectively.
Earlier, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar shared details of Operation Ghazab lil-Haq. He said Pakistani forces killed 331 Afghan Taliban fighters and wounded over 500 others. He added that 104 posts were destroyed and 22 militants were captured.
According to Tarar, 163 tanks and armored vehicles were destroyed. Airstrikes targeted 37 locations inside Afghanistan. The operation included coordinated air and ground strikes along the border.
Pakistani officials have described the action as a response to unprovoked cross-border attacks. They maintain that all steps taken are in line with national security and self-defence principles.
The situation remains tense, but US officials have reaffirmed their support for Pakistan’s right to protect its sovereignty and citizens.
