Violence Erupts At Petrol Pump After Employees Refusing Illegal Gallon Sales

A surge in petrol prices triggered panic across Pakistan, with long queues forming at petrol stations. Several incidents of arguments and clashes between staff and customers were reported.

In Sialkot, violence escalated when petrol pump employees were refusing to provide petrol in open gallons, as per government regulations. Armed men opened fire, killing one employee and critically injuring another, police said.

The incident took place at a pump in the Haji Pura police station area. Police reports confirmed that the dispute began after the staff refused to supply petrol in gallons. Enraged by the refusal, the suspects fired indiscriminately. One worker died on the spot, while another sustained serious injuries. The attackers then fled the scene.

Station House Officer (SHO) Haji Pura said the suspects were identified with the help of CCTV footage. The attackers were brothers, named Khawaja Haseeb and Khawaja Hassan. Authorities conducted a swift operation, arresting a main suspect, Khawaja Muneeb, while searches for the second suspect are ongoing.

The violent episode came just after the Government of Pakistan announced a sharp rise in petrol prices. Petrol and diesel prices were increased by Rs55 per litre due to escalating global oil costs linked to tensions in the Middle East. Under the new rates, petrol now costs Rs321.17 per litre, while diesel is Rs335.86 per litre.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar explained that the surge followed an attack on Iran, which escalated the regional conflict involving Turkey and Azerbaijan. This tension pushed global oil prices higher, leading to the domestic price increase.

Authorities urged the public to remain calm and follow regulations. Officials emphasized that petrol pump employees are enforcing rules and should not be targeted for refusing illegal requests. The incident highlights the dangers faced by staff who must adhere to government guidelines while dealing with frustrated customers.

Police continue their investigation and have warned that anyone resorting to violence over petrol purchases will face strict legal action. Citizens are advised to cooperate and avoid confrontations, especially over illegal demands.

The deadly Sialkot attack marks a warning about the consequences of aggression and highlights the ongoing challenges for petrol pump workers refusing unlawful requests.
