The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Lahore has issued a stern warning to residents about the dangers of open manholes. The agency announced that anyone found stealing manhole covers or involved in their trade will face legal action under Section 324 โ attempt-to-murder.
This warning follows a tragic incident in Bhati Gate, where a woman and her nine-month-old daughter died after falling into an uncovered manhole. The incident sparked outrage and led to the arrest of several government officials on charges of negligence.
WASA urged citizens to immediately report missing or damaged manhole covers in their neighborhoods. In a social media message, the agency said, โResidents of Lahore are urged to safeguard lives. If a manhole cover is missing or broken, report it immediately to the nearest WASA office or via complaint channels.โ
Authorities emphasized that stealing manhole covers is not just theft but a threat to public safety. Legal action will also be taken against anyone caught buying or selling stolen covers. WASA provided helpline numbers 1334 and 0334-1334470 for reporting water or sewer-related complaints.
Following the Bhati Gate tragedy, police secured four daysโ physical remand for five accused linked to the incident. The accused include Project Manager Asghar Sandhu, safety in-charge Hunzala, site in-charge Ahmad Nawaz, and two brothers, Salman and Usman, working for a private company. Police aim to gather evidence and question those allegedly responsible for negligence.
WASA officials stressed that the publicโs cooperation is crucial in preventing further accidents. Residents are asked to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity, including stealing manhole covers, to protect lives.
The agencyโs warning underscores the deadly consequences of negligence and illegal activities involving manholes. Authorities say strict measures will continue to ensure the safety of citizens across Lahore.
