Will the 27th Amendment Pass? Shehbaz Seeks PPP’s Green Light

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari revealed on Monday that a government delegation led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with him and President Asif Ali Zardari to seek the PPP’s support for the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment.

In a post shared on X, Bilawal stated that the meeting focused on several key constitutional changes. These included the establishment of a constitutional court, appointment of executive magistrates, and the transfer of judges. The proposal also suggested removing the protection of the provincial share in the National Finance Commission (NFC) and amending Article 243 of the Constitution, which deals with the command of the armed forces.

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari added that the PPP’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) will meet on November 6 to decide the party’s official stance once President Zardari returns from Doha. The meeting will determine whether the PPP supports or opposes the government’s proposed amendments.

The federal government, after passing the 26th Constitutional Amendment last year, has been preparing the 27th Amendment. The new proposal reportedly aims to reform local governance and address issues that were left unresolved in previous legislation.

However, the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) strongly criticized the proposed amendment. PTI leaders accused the ruling coalition of attempting to weaken judicial independence and concentrate more authority in the executive branch.

Political analysts say the PPP’s decision will play a decisive role in determining whether the 27th Amendment moves forward, given its influence in both Parliament and provincial assemblies.

The meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the PPP leadership highlights the importance of political consensus on constitutional reforms, particularly at a time when the country faces challenges of governance, judicial balance, and economic recovery.
