President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday addressed local Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders in South Punjab, offering guidance to political prisoners and reflecting on his own experiences. He advised that leaders focus on prayer and fasting rather than complaining about minor inconveniences while in jail.
In his speech, Zardari takes a firm stance on resilience, recalling his own 14-and-a-half-year imprisonment. He emphasized that prisons are places for reflection and worship, and that political leaders must endure hardship with courage and dignity.
Advice for Political Leaders
Without directly naming PTI founder Imran Khan, Zardari takes a clear jab at those who complain about prison conditions. He remarked that some leaders begin raising issues such as eyesight problems or lack of milk within months of detention.
“Those who claim to believe in the concept of ‘Riyasat-e-Madina’ should observe fasts and offer prayers in jail,” he said, stressing that spiritual discipline and patience are more important than material comforts.
He also highlighted that imprisonment is not new for political figures, noting, “We have also faced jails. For leaders, prisons become like a second home.”
Support for PPP and South Punjab Leaders
During his visit, President Zardari expressed hope for Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s future as prime minister. He also acknowledged the contributions of senior political figures from South Punjab, including Makhdoom Ahmed Mehmood and the Gillani family, for strengthening the region’s political landscape.
Zardari takes a moment to connect with local traditions, comparing South Punjab’s culture to his native Sindh. He called on citizens to support the PPP and work toward political stability in the region.
Commentary on Current Affairs
The president commented on the country’s economic challenges, attributing inflation and economic mismanagement to the previous government. He also criticized Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting that setbacks have not altered the neighboring country’s approach.
Overall, President Zardari’s remarks combined political advice, personal reflection, and calls for resilience, reinforcing his position as a senior figure in Pakistan’s political landscape while urging leaders and citizens alike to maintain strength during challenging times.
