Pakistan's Commitment to Democratic Process and Human Rights Ahead of General Elections

The Foreign Office Spokesperson, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, affirmed Pakistan’s dedication to upholding fundamental freedoms and ensuring a democratic process in response to inquiries regarding the upcoming general elections.

In her official statement, Mumtaz reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive democratic environment, maintaining the rule of law, and safeguarding human rights as enshrined in its laws and Constitution.

Assuring the public, Mumtaz stated that comprehensive security measures had been put in place to facilitate the smooth conduct of the elections scheduled for February 8, 2024, in accordance with electoral laws.

She highlighted the integrity of Pakistan’s judicial system, emphasizing its provision for fair trials and due process, and assured that domestic legal avenues were available to address any electoral grievances.

Mumtaz’s remarks followed a statement by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Liz Throssell, condemning the harassment and detentions of PTI leaders ahead of the polls. Throssell called on Pakistani authorities to ensure a fully free and fair electoral process.

Throssell underscored the significance of elections as an opportunity to reaffirm Pakistan’s commitment to human rights and democracy, urging equal participation for all citizens, including women and minorities.

Expressing concern over reported instances of armed attacks targeting political parties, Throssell urged fair competition among all eligible parties and called for a careful review of legal cases against PTI leaders, including Imran Khan, in accordance with due process and international human rights obligations.

Additionally, Throssell raised concerns about barriers faced by women and minority communities, urging the creation of an environment that promotes and protects a comprehensive range of rights, including economic, social, cultural, civil, and political rights.

The appeal from the UN High Commissioner comes as the international community closely monitors Pakistan’s electoral process.
