Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Narendra Modi on his swearing-in as India’s Prime Minister on Monday.
PM Sharif wrote on X: “Felicitations to @narendramodi on taking oath as the Prime Minister of India.”
On Sunday, PM Modi began his third consecutive term, becoming the first leader since Jawaharlal Nehru to achieve this milestone with full terms in office.
Alongside Modi, ministers including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and JP Nadda also took their oaths.
Following a six-week election and the counting of 640 million votes, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a majority, although with fewer seats than in 2019.
The BJP won 240 seats, short of the 272 needed for an outright majority in the 543-seat Lok Sabha. However, with allies, the BJP secured 293 seats overall.
The opposition INDIA alliance, led by Rahul Gandhi’s Indian National Congress (INC), won 232 seats, with the Congress alone taking 99 seats, up from 52 in 2019.
With allies, the INC won in 91 constituencies.
These results differ sharply from 2019, where the BJP-led NDA won 353 seats, with the BJP alone securing 303.
In a similar exchange of greetings, Modi had congratulated Shehbaz Sharif on becoming Pakistan’s Prime Minister following the February 8 elections in Pakistan.
“Congratulations to @CMShehbaz on being sworn in as the Prime Minister of Pakistan,” Modi wrote on X.
Shehbaz thanked Modi, expressing Pakistan’s desire for good relations with all neighbors, including India.
PM Shehbaz’s response was advised to mirror Modi’s brief message. “Thank you @narendramodi for felicitations on my election as the Prime Minister of Pakistan,” he wrote on X.
