Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, has affirmed the government’s commitment to facilitating safe and efficient travel for pilgrims heading to Iraq and Iran for the Arbaeen pilgrimage. Addressing the National Assembly, he highlighted the steps taken to ensure the safety and convenience of the pilgrims.
Due to escalating security concerns, particularly the threat of terrorist attacks on overland routes, the government has prohibited road travel for pilgrims from Quetta to Iran and Iraq. To mitigate these risks, the federal government has authorized the Balochistan government to operate direct flights from Quetta to the destinations, enhancing safety for the pilgrims. One such flight has already commenced, with plans to increase the frequency to meet the demand. Additionally, arrangements have been made for onward transportation from airports in Iran and Iraq to the pilgrims’ intended sites.
To further facilitate travel, the government has invited private carriers to operate on the route, allowing all licensed private airlines to provide services. Chartered flights have also been approved to maximize the number of pilgrims able to travel safely. These measures aim to offer maximum facilities while avoiding the security hazards of road travel.
Minister Asif emphasized that these decisions were made in consultation with relevant authorities and in the interest of public safety and national security. He assured the public that the government is fully committed to ensuring safe, comfortable, and timely transportation for all Arbaeen pilgrims.
These initiatives reflect the government’s dedication to supporting the religious practices of its citizens while prioritizing their safety during the pilgrimage.
