Noreen Niazi, the sister of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, has reportedly been moved from Kot Lakhpat Jail to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) in Lahore after her health deteriorated during detention.
Her lawyer, Rana Mudassar Umar, confirmed the development on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. According to media reports, the transfer took place after Noreen experienced health concerns while in custody.
The 70-year-old’s hospitalisation has drawn attention to her medical condition and the circumstances surrounding her detention. However, detailed information about her diagnosis and ongoing treatment has not been officially confirmed.
According to reports, jail doctors recommended moving Noreen to the medical facility for further examination. Her lawyer also requested prayers for her recovery and raised concerns about the way the hospital transfer was handled.
Umar alleged that her family had not been informed before she was taken to the hospital. This claim has not been independently verified, and further details about the notification arrangements remain unclear.
The development comes amid continuing legal proceedings concerning the detention of Imran Khan’s sisters.
The Lahore High Court recently considered a petition seeking the release of Aleema Khan, Dr Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi. During the proceedings, the Punjab government informed the court that the detention orders against all three women had been extended for another 30 days.
The government’s position was presented by an assistant advocate general before Justice Abher Gul Khan. A report submitted on behalf of the provincial home secretary stated that the extension had been approved on October 7 following a recommendation from the Lahore deputy commissioner.
The court subsequently disposed of the petition after considering the government’s report. During the hearing, the judge also noted that the deputy commissioner responsible for issuing the detention orders had not been included as a respondent in the case.
Noreen, Aleema and Uzma were detained in September as PTI prepared for a planned protest march towards Islamabad. Authorities reportedly invoked Section 3 of the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960, which permits preventive detention in specified circumstances involving public order.
The initial detention orders were issued for 30 days. According to the petitioner’s lawyer, Aleema’s detention was scheduled to expire on October 19, while the detention periods for Uzma and Noreen were expected to end on October 20.
The Punjab government subsequently approved an extension for another month, prompting further legal proceedings over the sisters’ continued detention.
Questions about access to family members, lawyers and medical care have also featured in public discussion surrounding the case. Noreen’s lawyer has expressed concerns about the arrangements for family notification and access during detention.
A jail official quoted by Dawn, however, said essential medicines and daily-use items were being provided to the inmates. The official also indicated that permission for meetings with relatives and lawyers fell within the authority of the Lahore deputy commissioner.
Noreen’s current medical condition, the treatment she is receiving and the timing of any possible discharge have not been conclusively established in the available reports.
