Rawalpindi Enforces Section 144 Ahead of PTI Protests on August 5

RAWALPINDI – The Rawalpindi district administration has imposed Section 144 of the CrPC, banning all rallies, sit-ins, protests, and gatherings of more than four people.

This move comes ahead of the planned nationwide protests by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on August 5, marking the second anniversary of the arrest of its founder, Imran Khan.

In an official notification, Deputy Commissioner Hassan Waqar Cheema announced that the ban is effective immediately and will remain in force until August 10. The decision is aimed at maintaining public order and preventing large gatherings amid growing political tensions.

PTI, led by senior figures Asad Qaiser and Omar Ayub, had earlier announced plans for protests across the country, demanding the release of Imran Khan.

The party has been vocal in its demands, with protests intensifying after Khan’s imprisonment on charges including treason and terrorism. Khan has been serving a three-year sentence in the Toshakhana case since August 5, 2023, and continues to face multiple legal challenges.

The enforcement of Section 144 comes as a precautionary measure in anticipation of large crowds gathering for the protests. Authorities are particularly concerned about possible demonstrations outside Adiala Jail, where Imran Khan is being held.

Adiala Jail Superintendent Abdul Ghafoor Anjum has requested additional security from the City Police Officer. He emphasized the sensitive nature of the situation, citing overcrowding in the prison, which currently houses 7,700 inmates, far exceeding its capacity of 2,174.

The Superintendent has also requested the deployment of more security personnel, barriers, and surveillance along the route from Dahgal Checkpost to Gate No. 5 of Adiala Jail.

Additional security measures have been requested from the Home Department, IG Prisons, and RPO to ensure the safety of both inmates and the surrounding area.

As Rawalpindi enforces Section 144, all eyes are on the upcoming protests and the continued political turmoil in Pakistan. The government’s decision to restrict large gatherings aims to prevent any potential disturbances and ensure public safety during a politically charged time.
