Treason Case Against Imran Khan Still Under Review – Here’s Why

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan is reportedly under scrutiny as authorities consider a potential treason case against him. Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, hinted at the possibility following Khan’s recent statements.

Sanaullah noted that after assurances were made ahead of Khan’s latest meeting at Adiala Jail, a provocative post appeared shortly afterward. He emphasized that security agencies have been monitoring media narratives since the Jaffer Express incident. According to him, some messages appeared coordinated between Indian, Afghan, and PTI-linked media, raising concerns over potential “support and coordination.”

The adviser also commented on a strongly-worded press briefing by the DG ISPR. He said it was not coordinated with the government and described it as an independent institutional response. He added that the government fully endorses the military’s stance on the matter.

Sanaullah accused Imran Khan of blocking political reconciliation. He claimed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif repeatedly offered dialogue, but Khan rejected every attempt. He described Khan’s approach as confrontational, even during his tenure as Prime Minister.

Drawing parallels with the downfall of MQM founder, Sanaullah warned that PTI risks splitting into factions. One faction would remain loyal to Khan in prison, while another would function politically outside. He stressed that criticism crossing “institutional red lines” would not be tolerated, especially while soldiers continue to sacrifice their lives in KP and Balochistan.

The adviser argued that only democratic and responsible political behavior can secure a party’s future. “Politics built on hostility and abuse is unsustainable,” he said. He concluded that reconciliation with Imran Khan was unlikely, as Khan neither engages in talks personally nor allows his party to do so, leaving the government with limited options.
