President Dr. Arif Alvi has proposed November 6 as the date for Pakistan’s general elections. In a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, he cited constitutional provisions that allow him to appoint an election date within 90 days of the dissolution of the National Assembly, which occurred on August 9.

However, there are differing opinions on this matter, with some stakeholders, including the federal law ministry and provincial governments, suggesting that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) should announce the election date.

The president’s announcement has raised concerns of a constitutional crisis, as some believe he may no longer have the authority to set election dates following amendments to the Election Act.
The situation remains complex, with discussions ongoing about the appropriate authority to determine the election date and the need for delimitation of constituencies before the polls can be held.
